In the Rumph’s Day 1 night cap, Blue Magic went into halftime with a chance to seal the deal against Develop now.
Despite a nearly cleared out gym as the clock struck closer to midnight, both teams were neck and neck. Blue Magic went into the intermission up by 11 points and a chance at victory.
Jordan Hall made sure that was the case as soon as the second half began.
All by himself.
“It was kind of easy from the jump, but shots weren’t falling,” Hall said. “My shot wasn’t falling [but I] had a whole second half to play basketball.”
That’s when he kicked his game into second gear.
The former Saint Joseph’s guard made Drexel’s home floor look like his own personal gym, picking up buckets with ease. Hall started the half by hitting a three. That wasn’t enough. So he drilled two more to give Blue Magic Control.
Hall finished the first half with a team-high 12 points, but still felt the need to separate himself from the pack. His hot stretch continued for the remainder of the half, and it felt like any shot he put up had the chance to find the bottom of the net.
“The game was too close, and there’s levels,” Hall said. “So I separated myself.”
For most of the second half it felt like every possession ended in a shot from Hall and every time it had the same ending: a converted shot from Hall.
By the end of the night, the fans who remained for the finale were treated to an offensive masterclass. Hall totaled 40 second half points to end the night with a game-high 52 points in a 92-78 win to send his team into the winners’ bracket.
The 20th anniversary of the Rumph marks Hall’s second appearance in Philadelphia’s annual basketball tournament, and he’s hoping to pick up wins. Despite being eliminated in last year’s tournament, the weekend gives him and other players a chance to go up against both pro’s and local legends.
“It’s basketball. The Danny Rumph is full of all pros, so it’s always competitive,” Hall said. “We just came out on top this time.”
Now, Hall gets a chance to follow up his performance, this time with a chance for Blue Magic to punch its ticket to Sunday’s semi-finals.
“It’s a good opportunity to come home and put on a show,” Hall said. “I got another opportunity to do it tomorrow.”
