From his days at VCU to this past season with the LA Clippers, Bones Hyland has been known to get “Bizzy.” On Thursday night, Hyland brought the show to the Danny Rumph Classic.
Hyland’s 25 points and six assists led CheckRock to a 65-60 comeback victory against Wali Hepburn and Rex 6.
The Rumph veterans didn’t take it easy on Hyland as he faced physical defense and double teams all night. After a few minutes, Hyland realized he would have to dig into his bag of tricks to leave CCP with a victory.
“It took everything honestly,” Hyland said. “We flipped the switch in the second half and came out with the win.”
Hyland is known as a fiery competitor and he showed it tonight by jawing with Scoop Jardine and the Rex 6 coaching staff for much of the game.
CheckRock found itself trailing late in the second half before Hyland put on his superhero cape and nailed a game-tying three from near halfcourt, swinging momentum in Checkrock’s favor.
After averaging 19 points per game in his sophomore season at VCU, Hyland was selected 26th overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 2021 NBA Draft.
The Wilmington native averaged ten points during his rookie season with the Nuggets. Last season, Hyland was traded to the LA Clippers for two second-round picks, and averaged 11 points for his new team.
