After five days of high-level basketball, Team Rex 6 were the ones to hoist the championship trophy, closing out a 128-119 double overtime thrilling upset win over Team Chuck Ellis Workouts.
Wali Hepburn was selected as MVP finishing with 28 points, 9 boards and 7 assists. His dominant performance was complete in leading his team to a title, connecting from behind the arc, setting up for his teammates and knifing through the lane.
His scoring tear was aided by 29 points from Jamir Hanner and 25 points from Quade Green.
It was Green’s personal 7-0 run and Hepburn’s well-rounded performance that propelled Rex 6 to its first championship in its first appearance at the Danny Rumph Classic.
The end of regulation wrapped up on a controversial offensive interference call on Team Chuck Ellis that would have won them the game. Instead, the 0.8 seconds left on the clock proved to not be enough time for Rex 6, sending the game to its first OT.
Five minutes were allotted in the first overtime and Hepburn had a chance to close it out right at the buzzer. Fading into the right corner over two defenders, he put up a mid-range jumper that put him inches from glory. It knocked off the front end of the rim and popped out, meaning a second overtime.
Double overtime was cut from five minutes down to three minutes but Rex 6 was in control most of the way, eventually being crowned champions before the crowd stormed the court.
Green said postgame he came out to silence the haters and promised they’ll be back for next year’s Rumph Classic.
