Day One Recap: 17th Annual Rumph Classic

Day one of the 17th annual Danny Rumph Classic delivered four nail-biting games, none more than a two-possession final.

Game one opened things up with Team Competitive Training Company defeating Team Pierre Forte Workouts, 66-62. Villanova graduate Jermaine Samuels took home Player of the Game honors, finishing with 14 points. Denver Nuggets guard Davon Reed suited up for PF Workouts, posting a stat line of 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (28 points) headlined game two, which saw his Team 8EYE squad fall to Team Blue Magic, 63-57. Imhotep product Brandon Austin won Player of the Game, finishing with 17 points, six rebounds and two assists.

The most anticipated game of the day featured NBA veterans Marcus (Los Angeles Clippers) and Markieff Morris (free agent) of Team Family Over Everything going head to head with the defending Rumph Classic champions Team Rex6. Three free throws with one second left by Player of the Game and Neumann-Goretti alumni Quade Green — who had 25 points, six assists, five rebounds, two steals and a block — put Rex6 up 74-73 and proved to be the game winner.

Team Rumph Center posted a furious comeback in the final game of the night, defeating Team Arete Sports, 71-69. Boys’ Latin graduate Mo Watson was the Player of the Game, finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

In addition to a star-studded cast on the floor, there were plenty of notable names in the crowd, such as 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey, Atlanta Hawks forward De’Andre Hunter, San Antonio Spurs guard Jordan Hall, former Villanova big man Daniel Ochefu and 76ers Play-by-Play broadcaster Kate Scott.

Day two tips off at 5:30 p.m. as 8EYE (0-1) takes on PF Workouts (0-1).
